TEST: Special Hailey Treats

Today, I thought I’d take the test kitchen in another direction and test something for the newest member of our household, Hailey. She is a rescue and an eight-month old lab mix. Other members of our household have taken to calling her Shadow because she is exactly that – my shadow. Hailey follows me everywhere (nothing is scared anymore) and she practices lots of puppy patience when I’m cooking. So, this test is especially for her.

These homemade peanut butter dog treats come to us from Eating Bird Food.

Ingredients:

  • Sorghum flour
  • Creamy peanut butter (I used natural, just peanuts and salt)
  • Unsweetened applesauce
  • Chicken stock

I was surprised to find so many  wholesome dog treat recipes when I searched. I had all the ingredients for this one. The directions were easy-to-follow and straight forward. I added a bit more chicken stock because my treats were not coming together in a dough ball.

I did not have a dog bone cookie cutter (shame on me) so I just made balls and flattened them out to look like a cookie. Because of this my treats took about 20 minutes to cook.

Grade: A

A for availability of ingredients. Like stated above all the ingredients were in my pantry. And they are all easily found at any grocery store.

A for cost of ingredients. I used organic peanut butter and chicken stock pushing my cost up a bit. But, the recipe did not specify organic, so you don’t need to use organic if you don’t wish to.

A for directions. Like stated above, they were very easy to follow.

A for taste. OK, so there was only one tester, so the test might be statistically tilted. But, from the reaction: the aroma was fantastic, the texture was wonderful and the taste was plate-licking delicious.

Be on the lookout for the next test recipe. I promise a yummy human one next time!
